Making a Portfolio Site

Perfection is attained not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

This guide is aimed at photographers, but much of it applies to anyone.

Aim for around 12 images in total. Lead with your best images. Ideally, you should have unique subjects: choose the best shot from any set.

Don't have a landing page: get straight to the content.

Have a consistent theme. If you shoot more than one genre you want more than one website. If you instead use separate sections of a single site accept that few people will click on the other sections. You are lucky if they scroll.

If you must put everything on one site then use large images that display your work, but can be clicked to see more of that genre or subject.

Have your contact details easy to find. Ideally an email address in your own domain rather than a Gmail address.

Choose a short URL that's easy to read to people over the phone. It's worth paying for a domain name at around US$15 per year.
